How to flip an image
Upload a photo and the Rotate & flip tab opens with Flip horizontal switched on. The preview shows the mirrored result. Press Flip horizontal again to undo it, or press Flip vertical to turn the image upside down along its horizontal axis. Both can be on at once, and you can add a 90° rotation as well.
A horizontal flip swaps left and right, like looking in a mirror. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom. Note that a vertical flip is not the same as rotating 180°: rotating keeps text readable when you turn the page around, while a vertical flip produces a mirror image that reads backwards.
When to mirror a photo
Front cameras on many phones save selfies mirrored, so writing on a T-shirt or a sign in the background reads backwards. Flipping horizontally makes it read correctly. The same applies to photos taken through a mirror.
Designers flip images so a person or product faces into the page rather than out of it, which tends to guide the eye toward the text. Be careful with images that contain logos, number plates, clocks or text, because flipping reverses them and makes the edit obvious. Faces can also look slightly unfamiliar when mirrored, since most people are not perfectly symmetrical.
Output and other edits
Flipping does not change the dimensions or resample the pixels. When you download, the server renders the flip together with any other edits you made in the editor, such as a crop, colour adjustment or watermark. PNG uploads are saved as PNG with transparency intact; JPG, WebP and other formats are saved as JPG.
