How to compress a photo to 20KB
Upload the photo. The 20 KB target is preselected, and the preview shows the result within a moment. Keep the output format on JPG, because most forms accept only JPG. PNG uploads and phone photos in HEIC format are saved as JPG automatically.
Watch the status line. Under 20 KB means you are ready to download. Dimensions reduced to fit means the photo was too large to reach 20 KB by lowering quality alone, so the tool also made it smaller in pixels.
Best photo dimensions for a 20KB file
A passport-style photo of around 300 by 400 pixels usually fits in 20 KB at a quality that still looks clean. Many forms also state required pixel dimensions, so read the instructions and resize to that size first. The Passport Photo Resizer crops to common photo sizes, and you can then bring the result back here.
Starting from the right dimensions matters. If you upload a 12-megapixel photo, the tool spends most of the 20 KB on pixels the form will never show, and the face can end up looking smudged.
Why is my image still over 20KB?
First check the output format. If PNG was chosen by hand, the target no longer applies, because PNG is lossless, so switch back to JPG. The other common reason is a busy background or low-light noise. Grainy detail is expensive to store, so a plain, evenly lit background compresses much better.
If the status says Smallest possible at this size, the image could not get any smaller. That only happens with unusual files. Cropping or resizing first will solve it.
