How to remove a background from a photo
Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 25 MB. The file is sent to the server, where a segmentation model (U²-Net) estimates which pixels belong to the subject and which belong to the background. After a few seconds the preview shows the cut-out. Leave the background on None for transparency, then download as PNG or WebP.
If you pick JPG with a transparent background, the empty areas are filled with white, because the JPG format cannot store transparency. Choose PNG when you plan to place the cut-out on a website, slide or design.
Photos that give the cleanest cut-out
The model works best with one clear subject, such as a person, product, pet or vehicle, that stands out from its surroundings. Good lighting, sharp focus and a background that differs in colour or brightness from the subject all help. A product on a plain table or a person against a wall usually comes out cleanly.
It finds harder cases more difficult. Fine, flyaway hair and fur can end up slightly trimmed or with a faint halo. Glass, smoke, lace and other see-through materials may be removed partly or kept with some background showing through. Group photos, cluttered scenes and subjects that blend into the background can produce missing pieces or leftover patches. Check the edges at full size before you use the result for anything important.
What to do with a transparent cut-out
A transparent PNG can be layered over any background in a presentation, website or design app. Online sellers use cut-outs to show products on a consistent backdrop, and people use them for stickers, collages and thumbnails. In the same tool you can switch to White, Colour, Scene or Blur to add a new background right away, without opening another app.
