Why convert WebP to PNG?
PNG is supported by virtually every image editor, design tool and office app, while WebP support is still patchy outside browsers. If you saved a logo, icon or cut-out from a website as WebP, converting to PNG makes it usable everywhere and keeps its transparent background.
PNG is also the better working format. Because it is lossless, you can edit and re-save it as often as you like without adding compression artifacts.
What to expect from the PNG
Transparency carries over exactly, including soft edges. The pixel dimensions stay the same. If the WebP was lossy, any compression artifacts it already has stay in the PNG, because PNG copies the pixels faithfully rather than repairing them.
The PNG will usually be larger than the WebP, sometimes much larger for photos. That is the cost of lossless storage. Animated WebP files are converted using their first frame.
PNG or JPG?
Choose PNG for graphics, logos, screenshots and anything with transparency. Choose WebP to JPG for photos you want to share or upload, where a smaller file matters more than transparency.
How to convert WebP to PNG
Upload the WebP file and the PNG is created right away. The preview shows it next to the original, with the new size and dimensions. Download it and open it in any editor.
Logos and icons saved from websites often arrive as WebP, because many sites convert their images automatically. Design apps and slide software don't always import WebP, which is when a PNG copy helps. If the PNG is too large for where it is going, the PNG Compressor can often shrink it without changing any pixels.
