How to resize a profile picture
Upload a photo where your face is clearly visible. Choose the platform: LinkedIn and X use 400 × 400 pixels, Instagram 320 × 320 and WhatsApp 500 × 500. The tool takes a centered square from your photo, and the Zoom slider, from 100 to 200 percent, lets you move in closer so your face fills the frame.
The preview shows a circle because most platforms display profile pictures that way. The downloaded file is a square JPG, and the platform applies its own round mask when it shows it.
Tips for a sharp profile photo
Start with a photo larger than the target size. A selfie or portrait from any recent phone is plenty. Keep your face near the center of the original, since the crop is taken from the middle. Leave a little space above your head so it isn't cut off by the circle.
Plain, uncluttered backgrounds read best at small sizes. The Replace the background behind me option cuts you out and puts a clean color behind you, chosen from white, light grey or light blue.
Why use the platform's size?
Uploading at the size a platform expects means less automatic resizing on their side, and a square image means nothing important gets cropped unexpectedly. Platforms may still recompress the image when you upload it, so start with a clean, well-lit photo. For other square sizes, the Image Resizer and Image Cropper give you full control.
Profile picture sizes by platform
LinkedIn: 400 × 400 pixels. Instagram: 320 × 320 pixels. WhatsApp: 500 × 500 pixels. X: 400 × 400 pixels. All four are square and appear in a circle on most screens. For a platform that isn't listed, one of these square files is a reasonable starting point, since square uploads are generally scaled to fit.
